Moving from nursery to school can be a very anxious time for parents, carers and their children. As children approach statutory school age, staff at Nishkam Nursery will make preparations for the transition and will work together with schools to make the transition as ‘stress-free’ as possible.
We offer support by accompanying children on pre-school visits, by liaising with the school about children’s Individual Education Plans, and by passing on any other relevant information to the school.
Helping the school to understand the child’s needs can make a huge difference in giving them the best possible start to school life.
Children are able to visit their new school with peers, meeting the schoolteacher, spending time in the new classroom and also doing a short activity. Children may be able to meet other children that are going to be in the same class.
Parents and carers are also welcome to arrange a visit with the school if desired at their own leisure.
At Nishkam Nursery, we will carry out activities and tasks with the children to prepare them for moving on to school. These can include:
- Reading stories about moving on
- Having circle time discussions about school
- Building confidence by use of feelings activities
- Doing one to one activities when possible
- Using outside agencies such as teachers to talk with the children
- Looking at routines that may be followed in school
- Work alongside with agencies such as Pre-School Liaison group to follow any specific needs that children may have
At Nishkam Nursery, we will provide information and support for parents and carers, including:
- How to fill out applications to register your child at school
- Information about schools in the area
- Comforting and reassuring your child during the transition
- An open-door policy for you to speak to the management when you need advice and support
At Nishkam Nursery, we will offer support and advice to make your child’s transition as smooth as possible.
